The police are still investigating the early Saturday morning incident that occurred on a public beach close to affluent residences. Around 1 a.m., 45-year-old local Matt Ascaridis reportedly approached two individuals over the noise. At approximately 5:00 a.m., police got two reports of a body in the sea.

“We do know that he did leave his home he confronted these individuals,” said Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli. “There was a violent encounter that occurred between a 45-year-old man, a 20-year-old, and an 18-year-old.”

As a result, the two young men needed medical attention. After conducting an investigation, police searched 20-year-old Nicholas Caban’s residence and discovered a firearm with a scratched-off serial number. The incident with Ascaridis did not involve the use of a firearm or constitute a robbery, but he was charged with a felony weapons offense because of it.

Rick Lynn, like many locals, regularly uses the pathways of the old Fort Sheridan armory. What happened has shaken him to his core. “I am distraught. I am disturbed. I could cry about it,” Lynn said. “It is like road rage, but for housing. We don’t need that. Life is more precious than that.”

Highland Park is home to some residents whose properties touch the Fort Sheridan beach boardwalk. The public facility’s patrons have reported hearing frequent noise complaints from nearby houses after midnight. No one else is around saving Lynn and Dani, his dog.

“I know those people who live down there. They are really bothered by the number of young people who have parties down there, and they are also very generous and not complaining about it,” A regular dog walker named Beatrice Grevers made this statement.

A close friend of the family has confirmed that the deceased man is survived by a wife and two young children and that he was well-liked in the community for his roles as a retirement planner and hockey coach. The 18-year-old involved in the incident is in the hospital, while Caban remains in arrest. They anticipate additional charges being filed in the next few days, according to the police.

“We’re very close to Highland Park. Nonetheless, we are very sensitive to the fact that communities around that area have been through a tremendous amount recently,” It was Covelli who made the remark.
