Including spending by outside groups, the 2022 House campaign in Michigan’s Lansing and Detroit markets cost $40.8 million, making it the third most costly in the US. If Democrats want to win back the House of Representatives in 2024, they will need to spend substantially once again.
Barrett has already declared his intention to run again in 2024 and will be very difficult to unseat in the Republican primary. Last election cycle, he was a top-tier Republican recruit because of his status as a young Iraq veteran and proven vote-getter in the Lansing area.
In spite of this, Democrats blasted him for voting against a state tax relief intended to entice a GM facility to locate in the region, and the plant ultimately decided not to locate there.
