Charlbi Dean, Model and Triangle of Sadness Actor, Dies Aged 32
It was announced that Charlbi Dean, the South African actor and model who starred in the festival circuit smash Triangle of Sadness, passed away on Monday at a New York City hospital after an unexpected illness.
The rising actress co-starred in the Palme d’Or-winning film Triangle of Sadness at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Swedish filmmaker Ruben stlund, whose previous works include Force Majeure and The Square, has written and directed a satirical dark comedy starring Woody Harrelson and Harris Dickinson, which will be released in theatres in the United States and the United Kingdom in the month of October.
Charlbi Dean Died Due to an Unexpected Illness
Dean played Yaya, one half of a model couple with Dickinson. They were invited on a luxury yacht for the very rich, but things went wrong.
The film will also debut this year at the New York Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival.
On Tuesday, stlund wrote a heartfelt tribute to Dean online, describing her death as “a shock and a sorrow.”
“It is an honor to have gotten to know and work with her,” he wrote on Instagram, along with a picture of Dean on set. “Charlbi’s care and sensitivity lifted her colleagues and the entire film crew. I am sad that she will not be by our side in the future.”
Charlbi Dean Kriek, born in Cape Town and raised there, began her career as a model at age 12 and had her cinematic debut alongside Troye Sivan in the South African film Spud (2010). Syonide, a recurrent character on the CW series Black Lightning beginning in 2018, is probably her most recognizable role.
Death Race 3: Inferno, Blood in the Water, Don’t Sleep, and Porthole are just a few of her other cinematic credits. She has appeared on the covers of several publications, including GQ and Elle in South Africa, for her modeling work.

She suffered a collapsed lung, broken wrist, four ribs, and an elbow in a vehicle accident in 2008, but she managed to pull through.
Her fiancé, male model Luke Volker, just posted on Instagram about how proud he is of Dean and her work in Triangle of Sadness.
