How Did Kanye West’s Mother Donda West Die?
Kanye West’s mother and manager, DONDA West, died in a terrible tragedy in November 2007. Donda passed away the day after undergoing several cosmetic procedures in Los Angeles.
Donda West’s Cause of Death
Donda West passed away in Los Angeles on November 10, 2007, from “coronary artery disease and multiple post-operative factors due to or as a consequence of liposuction and mammoplasty,” per an autopsy.
The day before she passed, the 58-year-old decided to get cosmetic surgery, including liposuction, a tummy tuck, and a breast reduction.
Her plastic surgeon, Dr. Jan Adams, had a shady past and was found guilty of two major malpractice cases that cost nearly $500,000. The California Medical Board was looking to suspend or revoke Adams’ license during West’s surgery due to his alcohol-related arrests.
If Dr. Adams had given West a thorough physical examination, he would have found that she was not “healthy enough” for surgery due to her history of hypertension, diabetes, and coronary artery damage.
An anonymous second surgeon told the Los Angeles Times that West had approached him months earlier about getting cosmetic surgery but that he had declined because of a preexisting condition that could cause a heart attack.
Arnold Schwarzenegger, then governor of California, signed the “Donda West Law,” which mandates a pre-operative physical examination for all patients undergoing elective cosmetic surgery.
Her surgeon reports that everything went smoothly during the operation and believes West died due to a heart attack, pulmonary embolism, or an accidental overdose of pain medication.
Donda West passed away 13 years ago.
Overwhelmed with pain, Kanye made 808s & Heartbreak, an album which heavily influenced today’s artists.
Her death directly set up one of the greatest shifts in hip hop history, the effects of which are ongoing.

Even though the coroner found Vicodin in her system, they determined that she did not die from an overdose. Her death was brought on by a heart condition, which could have been avoided had she not been subjected to so many invasive procedures.
Kanye West believes he is to blame for his mother‘s decision to have plastic surgery because of her exposure to the public eye. “If I had never moved to LA, she’d be alive. I don’t want to go far into it because it will bring me to tears,” he said in an interview with Q Magazine in 2015.
There were viral videos of the rapper hanging out with his mom on the internet before the release of his new album on Sunday, August 29, 2021. In 2020, a year before the release of his tenth studio album, Kanye paid tribute to his late mother with the release of the song Donda.
