Will there be a Dopesick Season 2? Is It Renewed or Canceled?

Dopesick, a television drama created by Danny Strong, explores the role of a pharmaceutical corporation played in the outbreak of the opioid crisis in the United States. It is based on Beth Macy’s novel ‘Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that Addicted America.’ The series has gotten favorable reviews as it develops a fascinating narrative by skillfully combining real and fictional occurrences.

As a result, the show reveals a wide range of previously untold experiences regarding the opioid crisis. It was praised by critics for its handling of sensitive subject matter and the talents of its cast members. After seeing the show’s first season, you must be wondering if the show will return to our screens with a new edition covering fresh territory in the opioid crisis. Here’s what we know so far about Dopesick Season 2.

Dopesick Season 2 Release Date

‘Dopesick’ season 1 aired on October 13, 2021, on Hulu, with the season finale arriving on November 17, 2021. The debut season has eight episodes with a length of 57–63 minutes each.

When it comes to Dopesick season 2, Hulu hasn’t decided yet. Furthermore, in a recent conversation in November 2021, creator Danny Strong did not rule out the prospect of resuming the show. At the same time, Strong cautioned fan interest by disclosing that no official negotiations about a sophomore season had taken place yet.

Because of this, the possibility of a second season rests on the success of the first. If the viewership of the series exceeds the expectations of the streamer, a second season may be approved. As a result, fans shouldn’t expect too much from the show, which is based on a non-fiction novel and presents a story that ends. It is, after all, being touted as a miniseries at the moment. However, if Dopesick season 2  is truly approved in the near future, Strong’s team may need some time to conduct further research and develop yet another intriguing plot. ‘Dopesick’ season 2 could be released in 2023 if given the go-ahead by 2022.

Dopesick Season 2 Cast

‘Dopesick’ stars Michael Keaton as Dr. Samuel Finnix, Michael Stuhlbarg as Richard Sackler, and Peter Sarsgaard as Rick Mountcastle in the key roles. Rosario Dawson (Bridget Meyer), Will Poulter (Billy Cutler), Kaitlyn Dever (Betsy Mallum), and John Hoogenakker (John Hoogenakker) round out the ensemble cast.  The cast also includes Jake McDorman (John Brownlee), Jaime Ray Newman (Kathe Sackler), and Phillipa Soo (Amber Collins).

Keaton, Stuhlbarg, Sarsgaard, and Hoogenakker are likely to return for the upcoming season. The rest of the cast could possibly return to their roles, depending on the plot. Dever’s character was tragically killed off in the first season, so it’s likely she won’t be returning. However, if the show returns for another round, the makers may elect to start the new season with a blank slate by turning to an entirely new cast.

Dopesick Season 2 Storyline

Dopesick season 1 begins with Richard Sackler’s idea for OxyContin, a synthetic opioid. It spans nearly a decade, from the time the medicine was first sold until the time a lawsuit was filed against the manufacturer, Purdue Pharma. In the end, Mountcastle and Ramseyer are successful in exposing OxyContin’s misbranding and Purdue Pharma’s wrongdoings. Because of this, Purdue has to deal with a great deal of bad press and expensive fines.

It’s possible that the Dopesick Season 2 will focus on additional pharmaceutical corporations that contributed to the opioid problem if it does happen. Toward the end of the first season, Mountcastle and Ramseyer prepare to investigate another pharmaceutical company, which could be the subject of a second season. Strong has expressed a desire to chronicle the opioid crisis’ post-2007 events in a possible second season.
