Gio Reyna Injury: Dortmund Star is Set to Miss The Bundesliga Opener
Gio, a former American international, was born in November 2002. His parents, Claudio Reyna and Danielle Egan Reyna, met just before the USA held the FIFA World Cup in 1994. Daddy Reyna, a former captain of the USMNT, had a great playing career that includes time spent in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg, when he made history by being the first American to captain a European club.
In 2013, he was appointed sporting director of Major League Soccer team New York City FC. Gio, a prodigiously talented athlete from an early age, accompanied his father to NYCFC and joined the club’s youth academy, where his skills quickly became apparent.
He assisted his team in winning the U17 Generation Adidas Cup in April 2017 when he was just 14 years old, and he was also named player of the competition. The US U15s went on to win the renowned Torneo delle Nazioni youth tournament as a result of his heroics. He scored four goals and provided four assists, including the game-winning assist against England in the final.
Reyna joined Dortmund at the start of 2019 after an impressive 2017–18 season with the NYCFC U18–19s, during which he scored 13 goals in 17 games.
He was able to join the Black-and-Yellows at the age of just 16 like his former teammate Christian Pulisic because Claudio’s mother Maria helped him obtain a Portuguese passport. He participated in the club’s U19s team in 2019–20 before being promoted to the senior squad over the winter break. At the age of 17, he made his Bundesliga debut on Matchday 18.
Now we will discuss about his injury in the next paragraph.

Reyna sustained the injury in the CONCACAF Nations League championship match against Canada in June. She had contributed two assists before being forced to leave the game at halfway due to a hard tackle. The final score was 2-0 in favor of the Americans.
The 20-year-old is still healing two months later. He did not play in Dortmund’s DFB-Pokal victory over Schott Mainz last week, nor did he play in the team’s whole preseason or regular season debut.
The USMNT forward has not fully recovered, according to head coach Edin Terzi, who was speaking at a press conference before Saturday’s league opener against FC Köln.

Terzi declared that Thomas Meunier, Reyna, and Julien Duranville were all out. Felix Nmecha and Karim Adeyemi have some unanswered questions, but we are optimistic that things will work out for Saturday.
Reyna has experienced numerous injury problems while playing for Dortmund, but after being introduced gradually in the beginning of the season, he was able to stay healthy for the majority of the previous campaign.
Reyna, however, found himself struggling for minutes as the campaign went on because of the superior performance of the attackers above him on the depth chart. Despite only getting four starts all season, he nevertheless made the most of them by scoring a career-high seven league goals.
In Dortmund’s season-ending match against Mainz, Reyna came off the bench and contributed two assists as his team just missed winning the Bundesliga with a 2-2 draw in a game they needed to win.
