American retired basketball player Tyrone Curtis “Muggsy” Bogues was born on January 9, 1965. Bogues, who stood at a mere 5 feet, 3 inches (1.60 meters), played point guard for four different NBA teams throughout the course of his 14-year NBA career, making history as the league’s lowest player.
He played for the Charlotte Hornets for eleven seasons, although he also spent time with the Washington Bullets, the Golden State Warriors, and the Toronto Raptors. Over a six-year span (1989–1995), Bogues ranked in the top seven in assists and top ten in steals.

It’s incredible that Bogues was able to carve out a 15-year professional career given that he was a once-in-a-generation talent. He was only 5-3, yet he made 5-7 Spud Webb seem short in comparison.
And it all started at Baltimore’s Dunbar High School. In the 1981–82 season, his high school team went 31-0 and finished as USA Today’s No. 1 ranked high school basketball team, thanks in large part to the abundance of future NBA players on the roster.

Muggsy Bogues The 5Ft 3In Star Who Broke NBA Norms
It was only a week ago that the NBA season concluded, but already teams are planning for next year. NBA commissioner Adam Silver is expected to call the names of college players like Auburn’s Jabari Smith Jr. and foreign prospects like France’s wonder Ousmane Dieng on Thursday night. The first NBA draught took place 75 years ago, just before the league’s second season.
Also, one of the most memorable selections in NBA draught history took place 35 years ago this year. The Washington Bullets took the 5′ 3″ Muggsy Bogues with the 12th choice in the 1987 NBA draught. Their decision was suspect, and Bullets supporters had good cause to be skeptical.
Many scouts had doubts about Bogues’ ability to succeed in the NBA because he is still the league’s shortest player. During the time that Bogues was drafted into the NBA, the typical player was 6 feet, 7 inches tall. Isaiah Thomas, at 5 feet 9 inches, was the league’s shortest player last year, making Bogues look like a giant next to him.

Bogues quickly calmed everyone’s nerves. He spent the next decade and a half with the Charlotte Hornets and played in the NBA for a total of 14 years. When draught season rolls around, he is always reminded of the day his name was finally called.
Bogues told the Guardian that “every year brings back again” those painful emotions. For myself, my family, and the city of Baltimore that night of the draught was a moment we will never forget. When I heard my name, it was as though my entire body went numb. That realization relieved me of the burden of the world.
