John Hartman’s Mysterious Cause of Death
“Today we are thinking of John Hartman or Little John to us. John was a wild spirit, great drummer, and showman during his time in the Doobies. He was also a close friend for many years and an intricate part of the band’s personality! We send our condolences to all his loved ones at this difficult time. Rest in peace John,” The tweet says.
The post did not specify how the musician passed away, thus it is unclear if he suffered any kind of illness or passed away while sleeping. There has been no formal announcement from the Hartman family about his passing.
After the news broke, the drummer’s admirers and coworkers flocked to the internet to pay their respects and reflect on his remarkable career.
In the 1970s, the native Virginian made the journey west to California, where he was introduced to Tom Johnston by Moby Grape member Skip Spence. Hartman was a housemate of Johnson’s before Johnson became the singer and guitarist for the Doobie Brothers, and Hartman was swept away by the charismatic performer.
After a year, the band added Michael Hossack on drums; he was later replaced by Keith Knudsen. Having three drummers in the group meant that they took turns playing with the band over the years. Hartman, on the other hand, was a part of the Doobie Brothers’ lineup from 1970 to 1979 and again from 1987 until 1992.
