American actress Katharine Juliet Ross has appeared in film, theater, and television. She has been nominated for an Oscar, two Golden Globes, and a BAFTA. Despite being born in the City of Angels, Ross spent most of her formative years in the San Francisco Bay Area. She made her film debut in the Civil War-themed suspense flick Shenandoah.
On January 29, 1940, Ross was born in the Hollywood section of Los Angeles. Her father, Dudley Tying Ross, served in the Navy from 1906 until his death in 1991. He’d grown up in the Big Apple and worked for the AP before.
Ross’s mother was named Katherine Mullen. She entered the world in 1909, in Oklahoma, and left us in 1993. She had previously called Indiana and Oregon home before moving to the Bay Area. There, in 1937, she tied the knot with Ross’s dad. The family eventually settled in Walnut Creek.
Ross was largely absent from the film industry throughout the 1990s, but she returned in 2001 with a supporting role in Richard Kelly’s underground classic Donnie Darko. The next year, she co-starred in the comedy-drama The Hero with her husband, actor Sam Elliott. In 2016, she provided her voice for the animated comedy series American Dad!
