Will HBO’s ‘Love Life Season 3’ Be Renewed?

During the first two seasons of Love Life, viewers were exposed to a wide range of relationship difficulties, and not all of them ended in a happy ending.

In May of 2020, the HBO Max series premiered, following Darby (Anna Kendrick) as she navigates the ups and downs of her dating life. Aside from acting in the show, Pitch Perfect’s actor and executive producer found that she could connect with her character’s experience.

The Tony nominee told Variety, “Even as she’s getting more certain about who she is and what her boundaries are, to me, Darby’s such a different person from episode one to something like episode eight.”

“But it really isn’t until all the way in episode 10 that she is not looking to be validated.”

Kendrick said, “I’ll just say this, there was a point where there was so much from my life that it made me very nervous. The truth is, the show just changed so much, so often, and so many other people were so willing to give so much of themselves and the specifics of their life. Whether it was joyful of painful or embarrassing, that it all kind of got blended and remixed.”

The streaming service had only recently renewed the anthology series for a second season.

When asked by Variety about the show’s upcoming season, showrunner Sam Boyd said he was eager to give the story a major “reset.”

He said, “Even more specifically than that, our ability to split the difference between an anthology show and more of a traditional ongoing series so that it still feels like the same show and it really feels like you’re popping over and looking at a different person in this same world. “

“There will be these peripheral connections,** but it still will feel, I think, totally fresh.”

Season 3 will most probably focus on Marcus (William Jackson Harper), who meets Mia Hines and finds he’s dissatisfied in his marriage. The Good Place alum was the ideal match for Kendrick in Love Life.

She said, “Sam Boyd and I talked about various iterations of who the next main character would be, whether it was a man or a woman wasn’t even decided yet.”

“When he mentioned William Jackson Harper, I couldn’t help it but be like, ‘Well, he was on my list of people that I wanted to be one of the potential Darby suitors in season 1.’ So, you know, I love him.”

Harper stated, “As far as I’m concerned, Anna’s kind of an icon. She honestly gave me a lot of advice on how to take care of myself and stay standing upright while doing a job like this, which is really demanding. I think she understands how to conserve her energy and how to show up every day when the demands are high.”

Renewal Status of Love Life Season 3

Boyd hinted at the possibility of a third season even though the show has not yet been formally renewed.

In November 2021, he told TheWrap, “I’m just hoping we get to season 47, and all 46 previous protagonists are somehow involved.” “Since the wedding of Darby and Magnus [in season 1], we’ve joked that every subsequent protagonist will be a guest. But we’re very much taking it one step at a time.”

Increasing the Number of Representations

There are multiple major characters in Love Life because it is an anthology show. Kendrick plans to provide a broader range of perspectives in the upcoming chapter.

Kendrick said,“[An LGBTQ+ story] was something we talked about when we were running around pitching the show from the jump, so obviously that’s something we would be really excited to do.”

Creating a ‘Common Universe’

There was a shared link between Marcus and Mia even though Kendrick’s character, Darby, was not prominently featured in season 2.

When asked if the same approach would be used in season 3, producer Bridget Bedard told TheWrap in November 2021, “So if it makes sense, we’ll continue to braid the stories together and if not, we’ll try something new. But the idea was always to have a shared universe from season to season.”

Connecting the Dots: Marcus and Darby

At first, Harper was considered for the role of Darby’s suitor on the HBO Max show, but he ended up leading his own season.

During an interview with TheWrap, showrunner Rachelle Williams stated, “I love the handoff from season 1 to season 2. That first scene is great. It feels like that could continue. Like, we may see Marcus in season 3. And then I don’t know. I mean, it does get crazy trying to carry it on.”
