Will There Be a Shameless Season 12 or Is It Canceled? (UPDATED)

There have been 11 seasons of the show “Shameless” on Showtime over the course of 10 years. It tells the story of Frank Gallagher, a proud single father of six intelligent, hardworking, and independent children whose lives have been impacted by their alcoholic father. The only time Frank isn’t in the bar is when he’s passed out on the ground.

Fiona, the family’s eldest daughter, has helped the kids overcome all odds and develop their full potential. They’re not like any other family you’ve ever met, but they’re not afraid to be themselves.

John Wells created this comedy-drama series, which went on to become Showtime’s longest-running original scripted series ever. As of January 2020, the 11th season had been announced, and it premiered in December 2020.

On April 11, 2021, the final episode of the season aired. Many people liked the show and hoped against all odds that it would be renewed for another season. Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming season of Shameless on Showtime.

Renewal Status of Shameless Season 12

The 11th season of Shameless was revealed as the show’s final one. Even the show’s official description stated: “It’s the last call and the Gallaghers are going out with the biggest bang ever. Changes are coming that will force each of them to either step up or hit the road, but they know one thing for certain – Gallaghers may grow up, but they’ll never grow apart.”

Showtime has announced a six-episode limited series titled Shameless Hall of Shame in place of season 12. It is a look back at what happened in the previous seasons of the show.

A look back at each character’s path is laced with fresh and original Shameless sequences. In some ways, it was the perfect way to bring the series to a close.

When Shameless’ last season was announced, Showtime President of Entertainment Gary Levine commented, “The characters of Shameless have brought Showtime viewers more laughs and tears and pure enjoyment than any program in our history.”

“[But] we just felt like, 11 seasons is a big fat number. We just felt it was time, and we also liked the idea of giving John and co. a chance to end it well, to be able to aim for that landing.”

Spin-Offs and Movies of Shameless

As much as the show was liked during its run, spin-offs and movies, based on its colorful characters will likely be considered in the future. Despite this, the show’s executive producer, Wells, informed The Hollywood Reporter that “I haven’t been big on reviving any of the shows or continuing shows. They have a natural ending.”

He further said, “I don’t want to talk ill of anybody else’s attempts to bring something back but there is something about the first time they are on that’s kind of magical. It was a show that people loved and you run the risk of undermining that. We are really proud of what we’ve been able to do with Shameless and the stories we’ve been able to tell and frankly that Showtime allowed us to tell. So, never say never but we haven’t had any conversations about it.”

Only time will tell if Wells will change his mind.
