Pastor TB Joshua of Nigeria is widely regarded as one of the continent’s most influential preachers. He claimed to have been in his mother’s womb for 15 months, making him a “miracle child,” and was born to a poor family on June 12, 1963.
The young man claimed to have had divine visions and said he had been “prophesied” a century before his birth. He had a series of visions that eventually led him to introduce his own ministry in 1987 under the name The Synagogue, Church of All Nations (SCOAN).
His meteoric rise to fame in the late 1990s paralleled the proliferation of “miracle” shows featuring various pastors on national television.
In the years since, the ministry has claimed success in curing various diseases, including HIV/Aids. People came from around the world to attend his weekly services in Nigeria’s biggest city, Lagos.
Forbes called Joshua one of “Nigeria’s most controversial clergymen,” and his followers simply called him “the Prophet.”
He frequently traveled throughout Africa, the United States, the United Kingdom, and South America, and he also ran the Christian television station Emmanuel TV.
At least 116 people, many of them locals to South Africa, perished in a 2014 collapse at one of his churches. There were no consequences for the coroner in a Lagos court who declared that “the church was culpable because of criminal negligence.”
Also, just a few months before he died, YouTube shut down his account because of claims that he used hate speech after videos showed him praying to “cure” gay people. One of his videos, in which he hit a woman and said he was getting rid of a “demonic spirit,” was almost taken down by Facebook.
He was married to Evelyn, and they had three daughters.

Pastor TB Joshua’s Cause of Death
On June 5, after finishing a live broadcast, Pastor TB Joshua reportedly passed away. However, the cause of his death has not been made public. ‘God has taken His servant,’ read a post on his Facebook page, which has over five million likes and followers.
