Viewers of the film, since its Thursday, July 7 release, are warning their Twitter followers that scenes depicting Jane’s treatments may be upsetting for those who have experienced something similar or who have known someone who has
“If you’re planning to see Thor: Love and Thunder and are sensitive to cancer/cancer treatment, it is an extremely prevalent theme and plot driver in the movie,” one viewer warned, adding: “Prepare yourself and take care of yourself if you need to.”
Another viewer said: “No spoilers, but Thor: Love and Thunder SHOULD have had a trigger warning for a graphic depiction of cancer, and the fact that we didn’t know going in is atrocious.”
“If you have medical or cancer triggers, I’d do some light googling on the plot before deciding to see it or not,” another added, with one person stating: “I knew in the comics that Jane has cancer. It’s been mentioned many times since this movie was announced, yet the cancer scenes still hit hard. Prepare yourselves if you’ve lost anyone to cancer.”
Some viewers, however, were moved by the film’s portrayal of a cancer patient, “Jane Foster’s storyline had insane emotional resonance for me. Both my mother & a close friend battled cancer a couple of years ago. Thor’s desire to protect Jane & Jane’s struggle to keep fighting really hit home. I think we all needed to hear a story like this.”
As stated on the BBFC website, “A character’s terminal cancer is a theme of the film; there are associated upsetting scenes.”
There have been claims that Marvel “overworks” its VFX employees. Waititi is being criticized for drawing attention to and “mocking” the visual effects in a scene from the new film while giving an interview.
People are also warning others not to watch the new Netflix documentary Girl in the Picture because they find it so terrifying.
