The NBC morning show Today (also known as The Today Show or, more colloquially, NBC News Today) airs daily from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM Eastern Time. On January 14, 1952, the first episode aired. After 70 years on air, it ranked fifth on the list of longest-running U.S. television shows and was the first of its kind on American television and worldwide.
The show, aired on weekdays from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m., later added airtime on Sundays in 1987 and Saturdays in 1992. In 2000, it aired for three hours per day; by 2007, it aired for four (though over time, the third and fourth hours became distinct entities). To this day, only ABC’s Good Morning America has seriously challenged Today’s reign at the top.
Today Show Cast
When it first broadcasted on January 14, 1952, NBC’s The Today Show was a morning program that ran for two hours. Dave Garroway’s program, which he hosted, had a mix of serious and comedic reporting and a chimpanzee mascot named J. Fred Muggs.
From its original Saturday time slot in 1992, Today it was moved to Sundays in 1987. The weekday show went from airing for two hours to three hours in 2000 and then four hours beginning in 2007. After decades of going head-to-head with Good Morning America, Today finally faced some competition in the late ’80s.

Matt Lauer (who has been with Today for 20 years), Katie Couric (15), Bryant Gumbel (15), and Jane Pauley (15) are the hosts with the longest tenure (13 years). Barbara Walters also appeared on the show for nearly a decade, from 1966 to 1976.

Although Al is also leaving, he is doing so with a more positive outlook because he is going on vacation with his family. Deborah Roberts and their son Nick, who they picked up from college for spring break, will join Al for his trip.
Al, another NBC meteorologist, was recently hospitalized after blood clots were detected in his lungs, and Dylan stepped in to fill in while he was away for the holidays. Al shared a special message with HELLO! for people worrying about Hoda and Savannah while they were abroad.
Hoda Kotb Rejoins The Today Show And Explains Her Absence
During Monday’s episode of ‘Today’ on NBC, Hoda Kotb was back behind the desk. After being gone from work since mid-February, the co-anchor finally said that her daughter, then three years old, was in intensive care at a hospital for an unspecified illness.
Hope, Kotb’s youngest child, “was in the ICU for a few days and in the hospital for a little more than a week,” Kotb revealed. “I’m relieved she’s back at the house. She has finally returned. For a long time, I anticipated the day would eventually come. And we’re keeping a close eye on her.
I’ve never been happier. Hoda Kotb’s absence from Today show was finally addressed by Jenna Bush Hager. Initially, no one explained why she wasn’t at the desk, and worried viewers took to social media to demand answers. Her absence from the show beginning March 1 was characterized as her attending to a “family health concern,” however specifics were not provided.
Sheinelle Jones, Guthrie’s co-host at the time, reported that Guthrie “wasn’t feeling great” during the broadcast and that she had to take a test. The test results were positive, so she “rushed home to rest up.” In the recent past, Guthrie has twice tested positive for the virus.
