US Claims That China Flew A Spy Balloon Over Top Secret Military Facilities

Tensions between the United States and China have escalated as the US has accused China of flying a surveillance balloon over a nuclear weapons facility in Montana, just days before the US secretary of state is scheduled to travel to Beijing.

The Pentagon claimed on Thursday that it had followed the balloon as it flew over areas of Montana, a state in the northwest that is home to nuclear missile silos. President Joe Biden had been informed on possible options for a US reaction, including employing fighter jets to shoot down the balloon.

On Friday, Chinese officials warned the United States against “hyping up the matter” in advance of Secretary of State Antony Blicken’s first travel to China as a cabinet secretary under the Biden administration. Blinken is scheduled to meet with President Xi Jinping in the coming days.

At a time when the United Governments and NATO have been warning about China’s growing military power and its goal to destabilize western states, news of the spy balloon, which US officials acknowledged was capable of limited intelligence gathering, comes as a surprise.

On Thursday, defence officials revealed that the United States has been monitoring what they believe to be a Chinese high-altitude surveillance balloon above the continental United States.

U.S. government officials have been monitoring the balloon as it travels over the northern United States for several days, according to Pentagon spokesman Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder. The balloon is “travelling at an altitude well above commercial air traffic and does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground.”

A senior U.S. Department of Defense spoke on the condition of anonymity to reveal that President Joe Biden had been instructed not to shoot it down out of concern that the debris could endanger civilians on the ground.

The senior defence official stated, “We are convinced that this high-altitude surveillance balloon belongs to the [People’s Republic of China].” There have been cases of this going on for years, even before this administration took office.
