When the Sun and the Moon are in a straight line, with the Sun lighting up the Moon from opposing ends of the planet, we have a Full Moon (see illustration).
Still, as seen from Earth, some Full Moons are only 99.9% lit. Because the Moon’s orbit is inclined at an angle of roughly 5° with respect to the Earth’s orbital plane, the ecliptic, we are unable to see the complete illuminated hemisphere of the Moon during some Full Moons.
When Is the Full Moon in February 2023?
When the Full Moon occurs when the Moon is above or below the ecliptic, our perspective on the Moon changes, resulting in a little reduction in the percentage of illumination.
Since the Moon is always moving relative to the Earth, a true Full Moon occurs for only a fraction of a second. This means that the precise moment of the Full Moon occurs during the day in some regions of the world.
However, when more than 98% of the Moon’s disc is illuminated, it can appear to be full a day before or after the actual full Moon. This can make it hard to distinguish between the Full Moon and the waning or waxing gibbous phases of the Moon.

Lunar Eclipses Occur When The Moon Is Full
The Full Moon occurs at the same time as the Moon reaches the lunar nodes of its orbit twice or three times a year. As seen from Earth, these are the spots where the Moon’s orbit intersects with the ecliptic, the path of the Sun.
Whenever this occurs, a lunar eclipse occurs as Earth’s shadow falls across the Full Moon. However, solar eclipses occur when the Moon lines up perfectly with the lunar nodes at the time of the New Moon.

Howl At January Wolf Moon As The 1st Full Moon Of 2023 Rises Tonight
January’s Wolf Moon, the year’s first full moon, will appear in the sky this coming Friday (Jan. 6). Simultaneously, the moon will be on the other side of Earth and very close to its farthest distance from Earth, creating a “micromotion,” the polar opposite of a supermoon.

The Moon’s position in the sky during the period of the Wolf Moon will be in the constellation Gemini, with a right ascension of 07h12m00s and a declination of 27°00’N.
