Foo Fighters Drummer Taylor Hawkins Dies at 50

Taylor Hawkins, the drummer for Foo Fighters, died at the age of 50, and his death shocked the music industry.

It’s still unclear exactly how Hawkins died, but here’s what we do know so far.

For the Past 25 Years, He Has Been a Member of Foo Fighters

As a drummer for Alanis Morisette before joining Foo Fighters in 1997, Hawkins was in time to join the band’s tour following the release of “The Colour and the Shape,” according to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame records.

“It took me a long time to find my position at first, it really did,” Hawkins said to Anderson Cooper of CNN in a 2014 interview for “60 Minutes,” referring to Grohl’s experience as the drummer for the famed grunge band Nirvana which tragically ended in April 1994 with the death of Kurt Cobain.

Grohl said, “When you have a drummer like Taylor Hawkins in your band, I don’t necessarily miss being the drummer — because I have the greatest drummer in the world. ” He called Hawkins, “a much more technically minded drummer than I am.”

It wasn’t just Foo Fighters that Hawkins had a hand in. As Taylor Hawkins & the Coattail Riders, he has recorded and released solo songs as well as music with the band. The band has three albums under its belt, the most recent of which being “Get the Money.”

He Died in South America While on Tour

On Friday, shortly before Foo Fighters was scheduled to perform in Colombia at the Festival Estéreo Picnic, news of Hawkins’ death surfaced.

“The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins. His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever,” the band said on Twitter.

“Our hearts go out to his wife, children, and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time.”

According to a statement from Bogotá’s health secretary, emergency responders received a call Friday evening about a patient suffering from chest pains at a hotel north of the city. The incident was responded to with an ambulance.

According to the statement, treatment had already been provided by a private health provider, but there had been no success in resuscitating Hawkins.

In February, they released “Intakes & Outtakes” their first full-length album.

It was only a matter of minutes until the news of Taylor’s death broke.

Reyes said, “We were all sad.”

On Sunday, the band was scheduled to perform in So Paulo, Brazil, following their performance in Colombia.
