Slotkin Senate Campaign Makes MI-07 a Toss Up

Rep. Elissa Slotkin, a Democrat who has served in the House for three terms, announced her candidature for Michigan’s open Senate seat on Monday, putting the 7th Congressional District, which includes the Lansing area, at a GOP Takeover of the House Mean for the Oversight Committee.

Biden won the 7th Congressional District (CD) in 2020 with a slim margin of 50% to 49%. With an overwhelming $11.3 million to $2.7 million expenditure advantage in 2022, Slotkin defeated Republican Army veteran and state Sen. Tom Barrett by a 52%-46% margin.

Including spending by outside groups, the 2022 House campaign in Michigan’s Lansing and Detroit markets cost $40.8 million, making it the third most costly in the US. If Democrats want to win back the House of Representatives in 2024, they will need to spend substantially once again.

Barrett has already declared his intention to run again in 2024 and will be very difficult to unseat in the Republican primary. Last election cycle, he was a top-tier Republican recruit because of his status as a young Iraq veteran and proven vote-getter in the Lansing area.

In spite of this, Democrats blasted him for voting against a state tax relief intended to entice a GM facility to locate in the region, and the plant ultimately decided not to locate there.
