A grand jury has indicted two men in the shooting death of Andre Emmett, an NBA player, and a former Texas Tech University player.
The Dallas County grand jury on Wednesday indicted 32-year-old Keith Johnson and 30-year-old Michael Lucky on capital murder charges.
Andre Emmett Cause Of Death
On September 23rd, Andre Emmett was sitting in a car in the Old East Dallas neighborhood when he was shot. A random pedestrian discovered the injured former David W. Carter High School basketball star. He was rushed to the hospital, but he didn’t make it.
Johnson and Lucky were arrested less than a month after Emmett’s death on suspicion of murder in connection with the shooting. Dallas police say Johnson and Lucky robbed Emmett of his watch and necklace before shooting him.
“He didn’t deserve this,” said Sasha Emmett, Andre’s sister, in an interview with WFAA shortly after his death. “There’s not one bad thing that I think anybody could say about him. He touched a lot of people’s lives, a lot of people’s hearts, and a lot of people looked up to him.”
Dallas native Emmett Knight played college basketball for Texas Tech from 2000 to 2004, with legendary coach Bob Knight at the helm for three of those years.
He made All-American as a senior and is still second all-time in scoring at his school.
The Seattle SuperSonics used the 35th pick in the 2004 NBA draft to select him. After his time with the Nets, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies.
Other NBA developmental teams he’s been a part of including the Dallas Mavericks from the 2006 Las Vegas Summer League.

In the 3-on-3 basketball league BIG3 (founded by rapper and actor Ice Cube) in 2018, Emmett was selected second overall. He was just starting his second season with the league when he was murdered.
