California Inflation Relief Checks: Here’s How Many Payments Will Be Sent This Week

The Middle-Class Tax Refund, one-time direct payment from the state of California, has begun reaching recipients as a means of mitigating the effects of rising inflation. The first installments were deposited into recipients’ bank accounts on Friday.

About 700,000 payments have been made by direct transfer since then, according to the Franchise Tax Board (FTB). (Many California residents will receive their tax refunds via a debit card in the mail, although the initial payments are being made via direct deposit.) The FTB has informed us that it plans to issue another 2.1 million direct deposits this week.

By November 14th, the FTB predicts that it will have issued 8 million direct deposits. The payments began last week and will continue in installments through January 15th, 2023.

Payments can be as small as $200 or as high as $1,050. The amount you get is based on three things: how much money you make, your tax situation, and the number of people who rely on you financially.

On October 25th, in addition to continuing to issue millions of direct deposits, the state will also begin issuing debit cards.

The FTB appreciates Californians’ understanding during this interim period. Recently, FTB informed us that they are unable to expedite MCTR payments by calling the agency. If you live in California and complete all of the requirements, you will automatically start receiving your payments.
