Marvin Powell, Former USC All-American Lineman, Dies at 67

NFL offensive lineman and former USC standout Marvin Powell passed away on Friday at the age of 67, the New York Jets announced on Sunday.

Powell spent the first nine years of his NFL career with the Jets, where he played right tackle and was named to the All-Pro team three times. He also led the NFL Players Association for two years.

After two consecutive All-American seasons with USC in 1975 and 1976, Powell was selected fourth overall by the Jets in the 1977 NFL Draft. He played on the USC team that won the 1974 national championship by blocking for running backs Anthony Davis and Ricky Bell.

In his first year with the team, Powell started every game and eventually became one of the franchise’s all-time greats. He was named to the Pro Bowl in each of the next five years (1979–1983). In 1979, 1981, and 1982, Powell was selected as an All-Pro.

In 1979, Powell’s teammates voted him the team MVP for the Jets.

“Marvin was one of the best linemen I’ve ever seen,” former Jets wide receiver Wesley Walker told the team’s website. “He was just a physical specimen. He was just good. I just loved him.”

Powell spent his final two seasons with the Buccaneers, during which time he appeared in a total of 133 games (130 starts). During his time as a player union rep for the NFL, Powell was widely regarded as one of the league’s finest. He was later elected NFLPA vice president and served as president for two years. The 1987 law school graduate and former intern at the New York Stock Exchange is originally from Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Marvin Powell III, Powell’s son, played fullback for the New Orleans in nine games in 1999.
