In the 17th century, the Dutch constructed a colonial capital in New Netherlands in colony they called New Amsterdam (Dutch: Nieuw Amsterdam, pronounced). Settlement in and around Fort Amsterdam evolved from an early trade factory.

The fort’s purpose was to protect the Dutch West India Company’s fur trading activities in the North River, and it was strategically located near the southernmost point of Manhattan Island. It became an outpost of the Dutch Republic in 1624 and the provincial capital the following year.

The last episode of New Amsterdam began with the shocking revelation that Max was leaving the hospital to work for the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. He made the drastic change so that he could spend more time with his daughter Luna, and it looks like it paid off: in the final scene of the show, the new medical director of New Amsterdam addressed her staff and revealed that she is Luna, who is now an adult and in charge and is portrayed by Molly Griggs.

Max’s choice to accept the new position in the current day timeline ended his engagement to Elizabeth Wilder. Still, Max assured Elizabeth that he would sacrifice everything for Luna. He told her that if he ever returned, it wouldn’t be for the hospital as he handed her the keys to New Amsterdam. But he is not in a relationship with anyone at the moment. In the wake of the conclusion of Season 5 of Other Amsterdam, the show’s medical director, Dr. Maximus “Max” Goodwin, has bid farewell to his colleagues and is moving on to new endeavors.

The medical drama series New Amsterdam was inspired by Eric Manheime’s book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital. Among the many guest stars are Ryan Eggold, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Tyler Labine, Anupam Kher, and Sandra Mae Frank.

Adapted to Eric Manheimer’s Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital, the show’s fifth and final season aired on January 17, 2023. Fans were devastated by the show’s conclusion, which gave each main character a fitting sendoff, but especially Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold).
