Oregon Will Give Out $170m in Food Aid to Students and Young Children

This week, 434,000 Oregon schoolchildren and children under six will begin receiving their share of $170 million in Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) food benefits from the Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS).

Each qualified kid will receive a P-EBT card (a variant of the standard electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card) with $391 in food benefits. Postcards will be sent in waves between the end of March and the end of May in 2023.

“We are grateful to be able to provide these food benefits to eligible students and families with young children in Oregon,” ODHS Self-Sufficiency Programs Interim Director Claire Seguin said. “As communities continue to be affected by COVID-19 and the rising cost of food, we know that many families are experiencing hardship and are struggling to get enough healthy food for themselves and their children. We encourage anyone struggling to meet their basic needs to contact our partners at 211, the Oregon Food Bank, and their local Community Action Agency for support during this difficult time.”

Each youngster will get a letter and card if a family has more than one kid who qualifies. Beginning in April, P-EBT cards will be sent to households once notification letters have been sent out at the end of March.

Children whose access to enough and high-quality food via school programs may have been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic may be eligible for these supplemental food benefits as part of the P-EBT program, a temporary COVID-19 response program.
