After he shot himself to death in a Florida nature preserve, the boyfriend of cross-country traveler Gabby Petito showed signs of being eaten by wild animals, according to a full autopsy report that came out Monday.
The body of 23-year-old Brain Laundrie was discovered in North Port’s Carlton Reserve on October 20. The resulting 47-page report recounts the investigation into his death.

The report stated that “possible skeletal human remains that were scattered on top of the dirt ground” were discovered close to where Laundrie’s backpack and shoes were discovered.
A pair of shorts, a green backpack with flares and an unassembled tent inside, a white metal ring, a scribbled half note, and a hat with a “Moab Coffee Roasters” logo were also discovered nearby.
The report states that not far away, detectives uncovered a dry bag with a journal and a wooden box containing a small notebook and a portrait of Laundrie. A rusted revolver was located next to the body. Two active rounds and one expended bullet were found in the cylinder.
According to the report, a member of the FBI‘s evidence response team discovered a projectile near the scene using a metal detector. According to the report, the water line on the surrounding trees suggested that the search area had been submerged for around three feet.
The report stated that “post-mortem scavenging/carnivore activity” of the remains that were “evidenced by multiple gouging and gnawing marks” found to be consistent with “feral dogs and coyotes along with rodents and raccoons.”
Several images from the autopsy were included in the report, but they were blacked out.
Although the contents of the letter or notebook were not specified in the report, the FBI revealed last month that Laundrie had confessed to killing Petito in a notebook located next to the victim’s body.
According to a statement by the FBI in Denver, Laundrie had allegedly sent text messages to persuade individuals that Petito, 22, was still alive after beating and strangled her in late August.
“All logical investigative steps have been concluded in this case,” FBI Denver Division Special Agent in Charge Michael Schneider said in the statement. “The investigation did not identify individuals other than Brian Laundrie directly involved in the tragic death of Gabby Petito.”
On September 19th, Petito’s body was discovered at a campground in northwest Wyoming, not far from Grand Teton National Park. About three weeks before her death, a coroner ruled that she had been killed by “blunt-force injuries to the head and neck, with manual strangling.”
In early September, Laundrie moved back to Florida from California but vanished without a trace. His parents discovered a personal item of his in the nature preserve near their home in the month of October, and shortly thereafter, his body was discovered there as well.

During their cross-country van trip last summer, the couple made their final stop at Grand Teton before Laundrie abruptly drove back to her house without him. Laundrie and Petito grew up on Long Island, New York, but they have been living in Florida in recent years.
The couple uploaded Instagram photos of their travels. After an altercation throughout Colorado, authorities in the vicinity of Moab, Utah, pulled them over on August 12.
In the footage released by police, Petito can be heard describing an escalating confrontation. After investigating, police concluded that Petito was the aggressor and opted to keep them apart overnight rather than press charges.
The search for Petito, which ended up being tragic, drew attention from all over the world and led to social media sleuthing and discussions about violence in dating.
