Diane Warren Responds to Beyoncé Fans’ Outrage Over Songwriting Credits on Singer’s New Album

0

Diane Warren, a Hollywood hitmaker, tweeted what seemed like a straightforward question this morning: “How can there be 24 writers on one song?”

However, on Twitter, nothing is ever straightforward.

As soon as Warren’s tweet appeared, Beyoncé’s legion of followers began responding in force. Her new album, Renaissance, features a track called “Alien Superstar,” and it has precisely 24 credited writers. Even though Warren did not name the song or the famous singer, the Beyhive was offended nonetheless.

Billboard lists the following people as the song’s credited writers:

Beyoncé herself, Jay-Z (billed at S. Carter), Honey Redmond, Christopher Lawrence Penny, Luke Francis Matthew Solomon, Denisia “@Blue_June” Andrews for @Novawav, Brittany “Chi_Coney” Coney for @Novawav, David Debrandon Brown, Dave Hamelin, Timothy Lee McKenzie, Danielle Balbuena, Rami Yacoub, Leven Kali, Atia Boggs P/K/A Ink, Levar Coppin, Saliou Diagne, Mike Dean, Robert Francis Anthony Manzoli, Richard Peter John Fairbrass, Christopher Abbott Bernard Fairbrass, John Michael Holiday, Barbara Ann Teer, Kim Cooper, and Peter Rauhofer.

Warren attempted to clarify his comments after a backlash from Beyoncé’s fans by tweeting, “This isn’t meant as shade, I’m just curious,” and later, “Ok, it’s prob samples that add up the amount [sic] of writers.” The Beyhive, however, was not amused.

Finally, this afternoon, Warren wrote, “I didn’t mean that as an attack or as disrespect. I didn’t know this, thank U for making me aware of it. No need to be mean about it.”

Recently, Beyonce caused her own controversy and had to make amends for it.

Beyoncé, Drake, and seven other songwriters contributed to the Renaissance track “Heated,” which features the lyric “Spazzin’ on that a**, spazz on that a**.” Spastic diplegia is a form of cerebral palsy that affects muscle control and coordination. The term “spaz” is often used as a derogatory term to describe those suffering from it.

The First Lady’ is Cancelled After One Season on Showtime

The anthology series “The First Lady” on Showtime will not be renewed for a second season. About six weeks have passed since the season one finale aired on the network, prompting this decision.

Showtime has confirmed that The First Lady’s anthology series will not return for a second season.

The First Lady Will Not Be Renewed For a Second Season

“We would like to applaud the artistry and commitment of our showrunner Cathy Schulman, director Susanne Bier, their fellow executive producers, our amazing cast, led by executive producer Viola Davis, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Gillian Anderson, and our studio partner Lionsgate for their dedicated work in telling the unique stories of three remarkable leaders.”

Following the political and personal lives of Eleanor Roosevelt (Anderson), Betty Ford (Pfeiffer), and Michelle Obama (Davis), the first season of the anthology series cut between three different eras in the White House.

The critical reception to “The First Lady” was lukewarm. The chief television critic at Variety, Caroline Framke, was not a fan of the series’ structural conceit, saying that “squeezing their stories together doesn’t just make for confusing television, but does them all a disservice in the process.” Only three craft nominations were given for the high-profile production across all categories at the Emmys.

The Oscar-winning Schulman served as executive producer and showrunner for the 10-episode Showtime series produced by Lionsgate Television and written by Aaron Cooley. Bier, who has won both an Oscar and an Emmy, served as executive producer and director for the entire first season. Executive producers included Cooley and Davis, Julius Tennon, Andrew Wang, Pavlina Hatoupis, Alyson Feltes, Jeff Gaspin, and Brad Kaplan.

Unsealed Court Documents Reveal Bombshell Allegations in Johnny Depp-amber Heard Trial

0

New details have emerged in Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s ongoing defamation lawsuit.

More than 6,000 pages of sealed pretrial documents were unsealed and made public two months after Heard was found liable for defaming Depp in a highly publicized courtroom battle in Virginia, providing insight into matters that attorneys for both sides wanted to keep from the jury. Shocking allegations from both Depp and Heard were included in the court documents, as were previously unseen text messages from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor.

Must read-

Unsealed Documents Reveal Some Serious Allegations

In the beginning, Heard’s ex-husband Johnny Depp sued her for $50 million because of an opinion piece she wrote for the Washington Post in 2018 in which she referred to herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” In the lawsuit, Depp’s lawyers claimed that the Aquaman star “concocted the story in hopes of generating positive publicity and advancing her career,” despite the fact that she never mentioned Depp by name in the essay.

Almost ten and a half million dollars were awarded to Heard’s ex-husband at trial, and Heard has filed an appeal of the verdict. While Heard was awarded $2 million in her countersuit against Depp, Depp attempts to have the verdict overturned.

Heard’s lawyers argued in court documents that “nude pictures of Amber Heard” were “irrelevant personal matters” and should be excluded from the televised trial. They also wanted the jury to avoid seeing a TV clip featuring Heard’s sister Whitney Henriquez and a history of their “past romantic relationships.”

The documents revealed that Heard’s legal team requested that “Amber’s brief stint as an exotic dancer years before she met Mr. Depp” be excluded from the trial. Her attorneys claimed in the filing that Depp’s legal team was planning to use the document “to frivolously and maliciously suggest or imply that Ms. Heard was at one time an escort.”

Unsealed documents included what is claimed to be a 2016 text exchange between Depp and longtime friend Marilyn Manson, in which the controversial singer referred to Depp’s now-wife Lindsay Usich as “an amber 2.0.” After Heard filed for divorce from Johnny Depp, Manson allegedly texted the actor, “Usich pulled an amber on me by seeking a restraining order.”

Texts from the filing showed that Depp then advised Manson “not to give her what she wants,” adding, “Sociopathic behavior… it is f–king real, my brother!! My ex-c–t is goddamn TEXTBOOK!!”

Documents reveal that Manson also warned Depp via text that “serious police amber type scenarios with L’s family” existed. He reportedly wrote, “I’m f—king stressing.”

Lawyers for the “Sweeney Todd” actor reportedly argued in newly released court documents that allowing the jury to see Depp’s texts with Manson would “smear Mr. Depp under a guilty by association theory,” which would hurt the actor’s reputation. According to the filing, Ms. Heard’s attempt to insert Marilyn Manson into this case lacks foundation, is wholly speculative, and constitutes improper character evidence.

Multiple women, including his ex-fiancee Evan Rachel Wood, have accused Manson of sexually abusing them. The musician (real name Brian Warner) has denied the claims in a statement released late last year, calling them “horrible distortions of reality.” He sued Wood for defamation in March after she accused him of abusing her.

Page Six and Newsweek reviewed unsealed court documents in which attorneys for Heard claimed that the “21 Jump Street” actor had erectile dysfunction, writing, “such condition absolutely is relevant to sexual violence, including Mr. Depp’s anger and use of a bottle to rape Amber Heard.”

Depp denied what he called Heard’s “heinous accusations of violence, sexual violence, that she’s attributed to me” during his testimony during the six-week trial in Virginia. Additionally, he said, “No one likes to be the one to “cut themselves open” and reveal the truth, but sometimes it’s necessary when things have spiraled out of control. Horrible. Ridiculous. Humiliating. Ludicrous. Painful. Savage. Brutal beyond comprehension. Inhumane and completely fictitious.”

During his testimony, Depp denied Heard’s claims of sexual battery and physical abuse.

How Nichelle Nichols Made Zoe Saldana Feel Safe Playing Uhura in ‘Star Trek’

0

To better portray Uhura, Zoe Saldana talks about how Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols influenced her. Uhura was created by Nichols for Star Trek: The Original Series. Despite having only aired for three seasons before being canceled in 1969, The Original Series was instrumental in developing what would become the massive Star Trek franchise. Star Trek is one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time, with an estimated $10.6 billion in revenue from 12 TV shows, 13 films, books, games, and comics.

Must check-

Nichelle Nichols Made Zoe Saldana Feel Safe While Playing Uhura

Nyota Uhura, played by Nichols, was a regular cast member throughout all three seasons of The Original Series and six Star Trek films. She was one of the first major Black characters to appear on television, so her role in the show was historic. After 18 years since Nichols’ last appearance, fans finally got to see Uhura again in 2009. Saldana played Uhura alongside Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto’s Spock in the 2009 Star Trek reboot film. So far, Saldana has acted in three movies as Uhura, with a fourth in the works. In light of Nichols’ passing, Saldana is currently paying tribute to her predecessor.

Saldana reflects on Nichols’s influence on her portrayal of Uhura in an Instagram post posted on July 30. Nichols passed away on July 30 at the age of 89. Saldana writes that Nichols told her to play Uhura “with all the confidence in the world” alongside several photographs of Nichols, including two of them together. She also discusses Nichols’ significance as an activist, calling her “an amazing woman—who blazed a trail that has shown so many how to see women of color in a different light.”

There was apprehension among die-hard Star Trek fans that the new cast wouldn’t meet the standards set by the actors in The Original Series, but the films have since been praised for their casting choices. While every actor brings something unique to their portrayal of a Star Trek character, Saldana has said that Nichols made her feel “safe” in the role of Uhura and her comfort in the role shows. In addition to finding ways to honor Nichols, Saldana seems to have felt more confident in her ability to play the role after receiving her blessing and hearing her kind words.

In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Uhura’s younger self (played by Celia Rose Gooding) has become a major player, ensuring that Nichols’ legacy as Uhura will never die. Nichols’ groundbreaking performance as Uhura on The Original Series and the strides she made for Black women in television and beyond has been lauded by every actor who has played the role since. Nichols may be gone, but her remarkable and powerful legacy will live on thanks to Saldana and Gooding, who continue to carry the Star Trek torch even after her passing.

Apple, GE, and Other Big Us Corporations Have Petitioned the Supreme Court to Uphold Affirmative Action

0

More than eighty major U.S. corporations, employing tens of thousands of Americans, have petitioned the Supreme Court to uphold the use of race in college admissions, arguing that such diversity is essential to increasing profits.

Must read-

Legal briefs filed on Monday by the companies, including some of the most visible and prosperous in the U.S. economy, set the stage for oral arguments this fall in two cases widely expected to decide the fate of the racially disparate practice.

Companies Petitioned Supreme Court to Uphold Affirmative Action

They told the court that they count on colleges and universities to foster racially diverse student bodies, producing pools of diverse, highly educated job candidates who can meet their business and customer needs.

“The government’s interest in promoting student-body diversity on university campuses remains compelling from a business perspective,” the companies wrote in an amicus, or friend-of-the-court, brief. “The interest in promoting student-body diversity at America’s universities has, if anything, grown in importance.”

American Express, United Airlines, American Airlines, Apple, Intel, Bayer, General Electric, Kraft Heinz, Microsoft, Verizon, Procter & Gamble, and Starbucks are just a few of the companies that have signed on.

The companies argued that diversity programs based on race are more than just a moral imperative and essential to their bottom lines, pointing to statistics and studies showing America is becoming more diverse.

They argued that if colleges and universities across the country were forbidden to take race into account when recruiting students, it would inhibit efforts by businesses to create diverse workforces.

In a separate brief, eight of the most prominent American science and technology companies, including DuPont and Gilead Sciences, argued that campuses with a wide range of racial and ethnic backgrounds are better equipped to foster the next generation of groundbreaking thinkers.

“If universities are not educating a diverse student body, then they are not educating many of the best,” they wrote, urging the court not to strike down affirmative action. “Today’s markets require capitalizing on the racial and other diversity among us … Those efforts, in turn, contribute to the broader health of our nation’s economy.”

The Supreme Court has ruled in a series of cases beginning in 1978 that schools may consider applicants’ racial backgrounds among many others but that they may not use quotas or formulas to ensure a diverse student body.

In her 2003 opinion in Grutter v. Bollinger, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor argued that “the path to leadership must be visibly open to talented and qualified individuals of every race and ethnicity” if the country produces leaders who are respected by the populace.

Harvard University, the oldest private college in the United States, and the University of North Carolina, the oldest public state university in the United States, both use race as a factor in undergraduate admissions, and a conservative student group is asking the court to overturn that precedent.

Students for Fair Admissions claims that Harvard has discriminated against Asian-American applicants by rejecting them at a higher rate than other applicants, violating Supreme Court precedent and the student’s constitutional rights.

Those arguments have been shot down in two lower federal courts.

Michigan Court of Appeals Just Dropped Abortion Ruling That Could Have Huge Impact

0

The Michigan Court of Appeals ruled on Monday that county prosecutors are not bound by a previous court order that sought to prevent the enforcement of a dormant law criminalizing most abortions in the state.

A flurry of lawsuits followed the ruling, culminating in a temporary restraining order issued by an Oakland County judge at Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s request, which prevented prosecutors from charging anyone with violating the state law that bans most abortions and dates back to 1931.

Must read-

However, opponents of abortion rights had previously claimed that the Court of Appeals ruling would have far-reaching consequences, effectively making the law prohibiting all abortions except those done to protect the life of the pregnant person effective immediately.

Michigan Court of Appeals Dropped Abortion Ruling

“We’re ecstatic. It’s wonderful. That’s exactly what we’ve been saying all along,” said David Kallman, an attorney for Great Lakes Justice Center, a conservative organization representing several Michigan prosecutors who challenged the injunction.

Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel, and many other pro-abortion rights advocates are fighting to maintain legal access to abortion following the U.S. Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade in June. The Court of Appeals’ decision continues to have sweeping and drastic effects on the state.

Abortion-rights advocates in Michigan are likely to file an appeal with the Michigan Supreme Court as soon as possible in response to the ruling, which has caused widespread confusion and alarm about the state’s abortion laws.

Paula Thornton Greear, the organization’s president and CEO emphasized that abortion is still safe and legal in Michigan.

“I want to make one thing abundantly clear: Abortion is still safe and legal in Michigan today,” said Paula Thornton Greear, president, and CEO of the organization.

The group claimed the injunction wouldn’t take effect for a while because of the court’s procedures. Attorney Mark Brewer for Planned Parenthood of Michigan has stated that the order will not go into effect for another 42 days to allow for an appeal to be heard. Before Brewer’s statement on Monday, Planned Parenthood had estimated that time frame to be 21 days.

According to Kallman’s group, that is not true, and the injunction has been lifted. Prosecutors may move forward with charges regardless of Brewer’s arguments.

Brewer has stated that his group will seek contempt of court proceedings against any prosecutors who seek to bring charges under the 1931 law.

“While the injunction is in place, providing abortions in Michigan is legal,” Brewer said.

Whitmer and her team filed an emergency legal request with a local judge late Monday, effectively ending the wrangling by temporarily blocking prosecutors from enforcing the 1931 abortion ban.

This filing is connected to another lawsuit brought by Whitmer regarding abortion, and it argues that enforcement should stay until the courts resolve outstanding legal questions regarding the constitutionality of abortion in Michigan.

Whitmer said in a statement, “Today’s dangerous decision by the Michigan Court of Appeals clears a path for county prosecutors to use Michigan’s extreme 1931 abortion ban to prosecute doctors and nurses and jail them for doing their job.”

“That’s why I’m taking swift action by seeking an injunction barring enforcement of the order. We can’t put Michigan women, doctors, and everyone else at risk of more confusion. After Roe v. Wade was overturned in June, reproductive freedom in Michigan was left on a knife’s edge, as today’s unexpected action demonstrates.”

Judge Jacob James Cunningham of Oakland County agreed with Whitmer’s argument and issued the TRO on Monday night.

Nessel has previously stated that the legality of abortion in Michigan is “hanging by a thread.” As she tweeted multiple times on Monday, “the thread has torn.”

The constitutionality of the state’s 1931 abortion ban and the existence of a right to abortion in the state’s constitution are both issues that are likely to be decided by the state’s highest court in the end. Despite their verdict, efforts are ongoing to add the right to abortion to the state Constitution via a ballot initiative.

Organizers of the ballot initiative submitted over 750,000 signatures, far more than was necessary. Even if organizers believe they have collected enough valid signatures, the question won’t appear on the ballot until the Board of State Canvassers formally decides whether or not they have.

Yeah, that, the song you’re playing? Yeah, it’s about veterans coming home from Vietnam and being treated like s**t,” he says. “Yeah, it’s not about the Fourth of July.”

After a recent spat with JoJo Siwa, in which the latter claimed in a TikTok video that the “Full House” star was the rudest celebrity she’d ever met, Bure has been the target of much mockery online.

There was a phone call between Siwa and Bure to sort things out, and Bure ultimately expressed regret for her earlier comments. Siwa clarified that her confession was motivated by the fact that Bure refused to pose for a photo with her when she was 11 years old.

HBO Cancels Another Latinx Series, ‘Gordita Chronicles’

0

Since HBO Max no longer prioritizes children’s programming, the Latinx comedy Gordita Chronicles, set in the 1980s, has been canceled.

A representative for the streaming service said in a statement, “Live-action kids and family programming will not be part of our programming focus in the immediate future,” explaining why the network had to make the “very difficult decision” to cancel Gordita Chronicles.

Must read-

Gordita Chronicles followed the life of 12-year-old Dominican girl Cucu Castelli (Olivia Goncalves) as she came of age in Miami. It was inspired by creator Claudia Forestieri’s upbringing in a Hispanic family in the United States. On June 23, all 10 of the comedy’s episodes became available.

Noah Rico, Savannah Nicole Ruiz, Juan Javier Cardenas, and Diana Maria Riva also appeared in the show.

“The series earned critical acclaim and a loyal following, and we are proud to have worked with creator Claudia Forestieri and our two powerhouse executive producers, Eva Longoria (who also masterfully directed the pilot) and Zoe Saldana, to bring Cucu’s journey to the screen,” the HBO Max statement said. “We thank them and the talented cast and crew for creating such a heartfelt, groundbreaking show that connected deeply with a very important demographic.”

“We are heartbroken by the larger programming changes at HBO Max that will not allow our special show that is Gordita Chronicles, show-run by Latinx comedy powerhouse Brigitte Muñoz-Liebowitz, to have a second season at its original home,” Longoria and Saldana said in a joint statement.

“As producers and storytellers who are continually seeking out the authentic and original stories that highlight our community’s joy and talent, we are so proud to have worked on this piece of magic. We continue to be blown away by the overwhelmingly positive critical response coupled with our growing audience numbers, which prove that viewers recognize the importance of this show’s existence and the crucial space it is filling for Latinx content in the media landscape.”

Over Twitter on Friday, Forestieri said, “Cucu needs a new casa, people.”

Other showrunners took to social media, using the hashtag #SaveGorditaChronicles to express their support for the show. Quinta Brunson, the creator of Abbott Elementary, expressed her hope that the Gordita Chronicles would be picked up by a new publisher in a tweet.

In an Instagram post, One Day at a Time showrunner Mike Royce commented,  “Here is the sad state of television today — this show came out 34 days ago, got great reviews… and was just canceled. Gordita Chronicles will be trying to find a new home, and deservedly so.”

Royce knows the pain of having a beloved show canceled, as Netflix did in 2019 with One Day at a Time after three seasons. In 2020, Pop TV picked it up and aired the fourth season before canceling it.

After only one season of the kid-friendly Head of the Class reboot on HBO Max, the streaming service is focusing on programming aimed at teenagers. This week saw the premiere of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin on HBO Max, a modern update on Freeform’s seven-season hit, and the renewal of the Gossip Girl revival.

A Doomsday Disaster, a Marriage Proposal, and a New Beginning: Riverdale Season 6 Finale Recap?

0

In Riverdale’s season finale, a deadly comet threatened to change everything, and it did. and from now on, Archie and his pals can expect nothing but change.

As a refresher: Percival has launched a comet straight for Riverdale and sealed the city off with a force field to boot. “I’m so glad I moved here as a sophomore,” Veronica says. Since Archie is set on finding a way past the force field, and Cheryl believes she knows someone who can reverse Percival’s spells, they decide to work together to find a way around the field.

Must read-

Huh, it’s Sabrina once more. Instead, they consult Cheryl’s ancestor Abigail Blossom, who says that the icy comet can be melted by her granddaughter’s phoenix-like wrath.

Riverdale Season 6 Finale Recap

Cheryl explains to the group that she can melt the comet but that doing so could drain all of her abilities, which could lead to the deaths of everyone she has brought back from the dead. (You know, like half the cast, Archie, Jughead, Toni, Fangs.) She also makes a request of Toni: that the two of them grant Abigail and Thomasina possession of their bodies so that they may spend one more night together “in carnal form.”

To put it bluntly, she was possessed. She gives in, and Cheryl and Toni willingly give up their bodies so that Abigail and Thomasina can enjoy some sexual fun on their dime. And then, Archie’s mom shows up for a visit, which is extremely bad timing, and he tells Veronica he wants to propose to Betty (!) and needs her help finding a ring. The world is ending, so it’s probably not the best time to ask your ex-girlfriend for a ring to propose to your new girlfriend.

We may not have much time, but I know what I want to do with it,” Archie says as he gets down on one knee to propose to Betty in private. I want to get married to you. She responds with emotion but then reminds him that a comet is headed straight for their town. She recalls that when they were young, he asked her to marry him, but she told him to come back to ask again when they were adults. The only way to find out is to “ask me again after Cheryl melts that comet,” and life returns to normal.

Riverdale Season 6 Finale Recap
Riverdale Season 6 Finale Recap

That’s something he can deal with… and is more resolved than ever to dismantle the barrier. Furthermore, after Abigail and Thomasina leave their bodies, Cheryl and Toni wake up in bed together with no recollection of the events that transpired (or do they? Percival’s force field can be destroyed if Cheryl can untangle the rope Abigail gives her, which has a thousand knots in it.

In their final hours together, Tabitha and Jughead watch Titanic (which Jughead has never seen but is one of Tabitha’s favorite movies), and Jughead tries to convince Tabitha to accept Alexandra Cabot’s offer to franchise Pop’s so that it can expand across the country.

Since Tabitha can travel through time, they also have a final date that spans their entire lives together, complete with children and old age. Betty declines when offered the opportunity to work alongside Agent Drake in the FBI’s serial killer division, claiming that she is “moving towards the light.” Also, she has a change of heart and eventually pops the question to Archie, who enthusiastically accepts. (Aw!) Furthermore, Heather dumps Cheryl because she sees that she and Toni are a “forever soulmate pair.” (Whoa!) And Veronica gives Reggie the casino keys.

https://twitter.com/RiverdaleDark/status/1553893270337376256

Veronica gathers the group together to share her plan: since her ability allows her to absorb the energy of others, she plans to use it to strengthen Cheryl before the big comet showdown in the hopes that the resurrected won’t perish a second time. Using Percival’s magic dagger, they all cut their palms and join hands, then Veronica kisses Cheryl to transfer her powers to her. Cheryl suddenly has the ability to see auras, become impervious to bullets, and read minds. She’s got some serious firepower!

After teleporting through a wormhole, she hears the residents of Riverdale singing Billie Eilish‘s “The End of the World” as a comet hurtles toward Pop’s diner. To stop the approaching comet, Heather untangles the rope, and Cheryl levitates while chanting a spell.

What transpired, then? The plan succeeded, as Jughead explains; Cheryl protected them from the comet, and everyone in Riverdale lived to tell the tale. There is a slight visual distinction, though: After donning his letterman jacket, Archie heads downstairs for breakfast to hear the tragic news that James Dean has passed away.

What?! There is no doubt that Cheryl’s actions have resulted in a time travel to 1955, where they find themselves back in high school. Jughead, decked out in his classic crown beanie, considers, “Maybe to survive, we had to go back to a simpler time.” in addition to being the sole survivor of the pre-comet era, he is also the only person in town who can recall it.
