“It was alluded to throughout Season 1. It was always there, but you never knew for sure; is he simply maturing more slowly than his peers? Now that he is older, they have made it more real and evident. Now it is quite evident that he is gay and does love Mike,” stated Schnapp.
While there was a sequence in the third season of Stranger Things that came the closest to establishing Will’s sexuality, Season 4 had a powerfully emotional scene in which Schnapp explained to Mike Eleven’s thoughts, which mirrored his own Will goes away and softly sobs after his statement, and Schnapp revealed that a large number of people have thanked him for bringing this scene and character to life.
“People have told me, “This Will persona made me feel so fantastic.” And I related to it a great deal. That is precisely who I was as a child. That made me really delighted to hear. They are writing so eloquently about this genuine character, this real journey, and this real battle.”
